Cat adoption in Milton Keynes
Adopting a cat or kitten
Could you provide a loving new home for a cat or kitten? During the process of adopting a cat from us, we’ll consider everything from your potential pet’s personality and how this fits with your lifestyle, to your home environment – creating the perfect match for both cat and owner, and the start of a wonderful feline friendship. Find out more in the Cats Protection guide to adopting a cat. Due to changes in our vet practices please note we are no longer able to consider applications outside of the branch area which can be viewed here.
The adoption process
Following your initial enquiry, we will request photos of your home and evidence that you are allowed to have pets if you rent. Once we have this and we are happy with the home you can provide, we will then pass on your details to the cat's current fosterer and get them to arrange for you to visit the cat. This visit is generally within a week or so of the fosterer receiving your details. Following a successful visit, we can then arrange an adoption date which is generally within a week or two following the visit (this may be longer if it is a young kitten). After the visit but before adoption, we will send the adoption agreement to be signed online via Adobe e-sign and sort the adoption fee, paid via bank transfer. We generally can't hold on to cats for more than two weeks following a successful visit as there are so many cats waiting to be admitted into our care, so if you have a holiday or building work within the next 6 weeks we recommend you wait. All of our foster cats are either cared for in a fosterer's house or in a purpose-built pen in a fosterer's garden. Most of our fosterers are based in Milton Keynes, but some are based further afield in Buckingham, Olney or Bedford, so please bear travelling in mind should your application progress to visiting the cat.
Please note that a different Cats Protection branch may have different timelines, fees and fostering set-ups. We do consider applications from 'out of area' but there is a small chance you will need to return to our CP affiliated vets in Milton Keynes or Buckingham for the cat's second vaccination or kitten's neutering if it is outstanding. While this will be at no cost to you, please consider this journey when applying from out of area.
If you do not hear from us after 7 days, please assume that your application has been unsuccessful on this occasion. That may be due to the cat having a viewing already lined up, an overwhelming number of applications or reduced volunteer availability. Adoptions are processed by one volunteer for all the cats in our care, so your understanding is appreciated.
