Welcome to Cats Protection North Ayrshire Branch

The branch is here to support cats and kittens in North Ayrshire, and a part of East Ayrshire too.

Do get in touch and we can advise you if we can help.

Want to get your furry feline friend/s spayed/neutered? If you live in North or East Ayrshire we may be able to help

 Find out more about neutering

The branch started in 1999 and is run by a small team of dedicated, cat-loving volunteers who are passionate about improving the lives of cats and kittens in North Ayrshire, working hard to find loving new homes for the cats currently in our care. We offer support with neutering and lost and found cats, as well as general education and awareness within the North Ayrshire area.

The number of cats needing help has risen considerably over the last 4 years. Our waiting list is at an all time high, and the volume of cats coming to us continues to increase. Help us to be there for those cats by adopting a cat or kitten from us. Choose to neuter your own cat instead of letting it have a litter. Volunteering with us can mean many things, from hands on cat care, to working remotely on your laptop. Supporting us financially is also very worthwhile.

Cat adoption in North Ayrshire

Could you provide a loving new home for a cat ?

During the process of adopting a cat from us, we’ll consider everything from your potential pet’s personality and how this fits with your lifestyle, to your home environment – creating the perfect match for both cat and owner and the start of a wonderful feline friendship.

Some of the many cats in our care are featured below. To express your interest in a particular cat, please enquire via their listing. If you have any general enquiries about your suitability, or the adoption process, please call us on: 0345 371 4218 or email us

Want to enquire about a certain cat - click on the enquiry button and fill in the form.  Sometimes we can have 30 applications for the same cat, and apologies in advance if you are disappointed not to reserve the cat you had your heart set on.

Remember for every 2 cats on our website, we will have another coming into care, so do let us know if you are looking for a certain cat?  Older or cats with medical issues take a bit longer to appear on the website.

Our adoption process consists of a call to discuss your enquiry, then a virtual or in person home visit, following on with the adoption paperwork being completed and sent electronically for approval.

Our adoption fee is £120 for a cat or a kitten.  Adopting a pair of cats or kittens is a £200 total adoption fee.

All of our cats are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, de-flead and come with 4 weeks free Petplan insurance cover.

Once started, our adoption process is normally quite quick - so if you are planning on going on holiday before adopting, or planning to adopt in a few weeks time please let us know before the process starts.  Only under certain circumstances would we reserve and hold a cat until you are ready to adopt.

  • Renting??  Yes we do let cats in our care be adopted by those in rental properties, but we do need to see a copy of the landlord agreement to have a pet.
  • Children in your home??  Yes we do allow cats to live in a home with children.  It does depend on the cat and their nature, as well as other factors.
  • Do you own a dog??  We do home to families with dogs.  Again, it does depend on the cat in our care, and of course the nature of your dog.

Support Cats Protection North Ayrshire Branch

Our cat rescue and rehoming work would not be possible without the support of you.

There are many ways you can be there for cats and kittens in North Ayrshire.

Choose the "Donate now" button below and you can choose to make a regular monthly donation to the branch - monthly donators to the branch really help us to plan and provide the care needed for our current cats.  OR make a one off donation to the branch instead.

Choose the "Weekly Lottery" button and choose to pay the Cats Protection lottery for £4.68 a month - and every penny comes to our branch (if you choose us as your chosen branch to support) and helps us greatly with our monthly income.

Gifts in Wills - very important to Cats Protection and to us.  Leave our branch a gift in your will.  Local legacies help us plan for future costs - a new van perhaps, or a replacement foster cat pen, or perhaps one day our own small adoption centre.  Just think of the difference that would make to cat welfare in this area

Appeals - sometimes we do an appeal for a certain cat in our care or for a certain purpose.  Our appeals are always live and we appreciate all support for these that we receive.

Other ways to give - find out about the other ways to support us - including the link to our Amazon wishlist.

Fundraise for us - get inspired by the events supported by our Head Office.  There are many ways to support us, with support from the main fundraising team at Head Office helping you.

Challenge events - run, walk or cycle whilst raising funds for us.  Our Head Office fundraising team will be there to support you.  Do something PAWSOME for cats.

Volunteer at Cats Protection North Ayrshire Branch

Without volunteers, our branch simply wouldn't exist. Our amazing, friendly volunteers are a diverse group with a shared love of cats who fit volunteering around their home lives and personal commitments.  Some of the team have been with us since 1999.

We're often looking to welcome new volunteers to join our busy team.

As well as meeting great people you will make an incredible difference to the cats of North Ayrshire.

If interested in joining the team, please contact us via email at enquiries@northayrshire.cats.org.uk and our volunteer champion will be in touch.

We have a number of roles within the branch which include:-

Cat Welfare related roles

Cat care volunteer - this role would involve volunteering on a rota basis at one of our cat cabin locations.  Feeding the cats, cleaning their cabins, enriching their experience through play, exercise and handling until they are happy and confident enough to find their forever home.  We normally have 3 cat cabins in one location.  Access to a car would be necessary as some of our cat cabins are rural.  Mileage would be repaid at a set rate per mile.  This role would take 2 - 3 hours one day a week.

Fosterer support - this role would involve delivering supplies of cat food and litter from our central store to our foster team. Also sometimes assistance is required for vet runs for foster cats too. Access to a car would be necessary as some of our cat cabins are rural.  Mileage would be repaid at a set rate per mile.  This role would take around 2 - 3 hours one day each week.

Cat admissions volunteer - this role would involve arranging and collecting cats into our care, adhering to the guidelines in respect of the welfare of the cat.  Completing the appropriate paperwork and settling the cat into our care.  An understanding of the varied reasons on cat relinquishment, and ensuring you are empathetic to those giving up their cat would be a requirement. Access to a car would be necessary as some of our cat cabins are rural.  Mileage would be repaid at a set rate per mile. This role would take around 2 hours perhaps once or twice a week or a fortnight.  It all depends on the capacity we have to admit cats.

Cat administrative volunteer - this role is all about ensuring that all details of our adopted cats are up to date. This can be a remote role, team interaction through WhatsApp and access to a laptop a necessity. A good understanding of IT would be a benefit. This role would take around 1 hour a week.

Adoption related roles

Adoption team volunteer - join the team who deal with the adoption enquiries.  These vary on a day to day basis.  Calling prospective adopters and discussing adoption, taking into account the 5 welfare needs of the cat.  This can be a remote role, team interaction through WhatsApp and access to a laptop a necessity.  All of our adoption paperwork is now prepared and sent electronically.  A good understanding of IT would be a benefit.  This role would take around 2 - 4 hours a week spread over certain days.

Publicity volunteer - keeping the website up to date with current photos of the cats in care.  Before and after photos are invaluable in recording the difference in a cat in our care.  This role would probably take around 4 hours a week - perhaps split into 2 times a week.  Of course, that depends how lost you get in with the cats.... its quite addictive!  Access to a car would be necessary as some of our cat cabins are rural.  Mileage would be repaid at a set rate per mile.

All our volunteers have access to many training courses to ensure that they are up to date with the knowledge they need to help make a difference.  We have certain polices and guidance in place and our policies are there to keep our cats, our people and the whole charity running well and effectively. They apply to volunteers and employees, and through training and over time you’ll become familiar with many of them
